In this collection of letters written by soldiers to superiors, loved ones, and family from both the Union and Confederacy it can be seen how prominent the feeling of duty and honor was during the time period. In each letter a soldier gives speaks on his or another soldiers honorable death. One letter  by Union Captain Watson Squire to his mother before undergoing a dangerous mission captures this feeling by writing the following: "Rest assured my death shall not be that of a wicked coward, but that of a God-fearing Patriot, if I am to perish in the cause... 13th amendment

Section 1.
